  Road transport is already significant to Ghana’s economy: It is the most widely available form of transport in Ghana; it links all major cities, towns and villages; it links agricultural production areas with local, regional and national markets; and it carries in excess of 97% of all passenger and freight traffic in Ghana.

  The crucial and significant role transport, in particular road transport, plays in the socio-economic development and in the integration of economies and people is obvious. In deed an efficient and effective transport system is critical in promoting economic development and for that matter enhancing the quality of life of our citizenry. There is no doubt that an ineffective and inefficient transport system has a salutary impact on the socio-economic development of any economy. The cost of transacting business is therefore high as a result of this situation.

  Transportation has been identified worldwide as a major tool for promoting regional co-operation and integration and can be used for improving the competitiveness of economics of neighbouring states. It facilitates the movement of people, goods and services from one point to the other. It also provides service to other sectors such as tourism, mining, health, trade, education, agriculture, energy among others.
